Pilates for rehabilitation
Your clients and athletes demand and deserve customized, adaptable solutions when injury or chronic pain impairs movement and performance. Known for its whole-body approach to fitness, Pilates is the perfect way to help your patients recover, rehabilitate, and reach their goals.
With Pilates for Rehabilitation, you will learn how to apply proven Pilates methods to address dysfunction and help your patients achieve optimal performance. Renowned instructor and physical therapist Samantha Wood provides detailed descriptions of the most effective exercises for rehabilitating and healing injuries, improving functional strength, promoting efficient movement, and managing pain.
In addition to step-by-step instructions for Pilates apparatus and mat work, you will learn the indications and contraindications of each exercise and the primary muscles involved so you can determine when the exercise is appropriate for each client. Modifications and progressions allow for adaptation of exercises based on the stage of rehabilitation or the severity of the injury or condition being treated. Suggested exercise protocols, organized by common orthopedic injuries in anatomical regions, offer the flexibility to tailor a program to the specific needs of each client.
Authoritative yet accessible, Pilates for Rehabilitation paves the road to recovery. Recommended by BASI Pilates and full of the latest research, proven exercises, and expert advice, this is the ultimate rehabilitation guide.

Then there’s Pilates for Rehabilitation by Samantha Wood and Rael Isacowitz—honestly, a game-changer! Whether you’re recovering from a sports injury or simply want to learn more about how Pilates can support rehabilitation, this book is a must-have. The way it combines Pilates with therapeutic approaches makes it ideal for anyone dealing with pain or those who want to prevent future injuries. I’ve started using these exercises for both strength and recovery, and I can’t recommend it enough!
If you’re into Pilates, yoga, or simply curious about the healing power of movement, these books are worth every penny!
All the mat pilates exercises are covered with progressions and modifications and, unlike many other books, explanations of the benfits of each exercise so you can buid balanced routines.
Exercises are grouped into sections of stability, rotatory, strength and mobility making it easy to select a balanced range of exercises. There are a range of programmes at the end (3 beginners which can be mixed and matched, 5 intermediate and 5 advanced) and lots of other specific programmes for sports, specific health issues, back problems.
The background sections are really useful without being too long and tedious and include a couple of pages on advances in anatomical research which explain why we teach differently now compared to the original 60s exercises. An introduction to muscle slings which although short and basic is enough for understanding where pain and tension can originate from and might inspire you to learn more about this area. Then sections on how pilates helps with pain, stress and aniety - great for your sales technique.
Usable For the teacher or the starting student or anyone interested in becoming more advanced.
It’s a straight to the point, yet packed full with all the necessary knowledge, to proceed correctly with Pilates. I would add, this book is a great background for those that are in need for clinical Pilates. There’s a lot of clinical input in this book. I’m a qualified healthcare and I’ve read several books of its kind. This one and Elisa Whiters’s ‘Back to life’ are my companions in improving my chronic back condition
I like this book so much so that I bought it in both formats, kindle and hardback.
Anyone who is looking for ways to strengthen various parts of the body and/or learn more about Pilates - this is an excellent resource.
It is well researched, beautifully illustrated and has great information to help support practice.
Thoroughly recommend this book!
I’m very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for getting into Pilates and is keen on understanding the muscles involved in every exercise…
I can't think of a better comprehensive resource that is easy (and enjoyable!) to read. After years of integrating Pilates as a rehab professional I am very excited to have this by my side as I treat, train employees, and market to our physicians. Thanks Samantha!!!!
The book includes in-depth details of common injuries and pathologies that instructors would encounter, explains them, discusses considerations, and offers goals and programming ideas. As many variations of Pilates exercises exist, it was great that exercises were first meticulously described such that those who may not be familiar with the Pilates exercise or a particular version of it can still understand what particular movements / programming is required. It creates a fantastic common ground (although if you are BASI Pilates trained, it is a bonus because the terminologies mirror our training so well. But even those who are not BASI trained will know exactly what is meant due to the information provided, so there is no barrier at all!). The best part is that in addition to the exercises, modifications and suggestions are provided to further customize the exercise for the clients based on their injuries and needs. These modifications also gave me ideas for how to program for those without injuries to better suit their levels or training goals.
Reading this book has been educational and has developed my knowledge and skills as an instructor. I feel more confident about how I can design the best workouts for my clients and how to assist my clients on their journey and their rehabilitation when injured. The clarity of information makes me feel less lost and confused about certain pathologies or conditions.
As someone practicing Pilates, too, I find this book was helpful in reminding me what I should focus on through each exercise and how to best cater the exercises for my own body for health, improvement, and performance. This book was as helpful for me as an instructor as it is for my own self. In practicing the recommendations for my knee injuries and conditions related to the spine, I am discovering greater progress in my work.
Last but not least, reading this book has been inspiring. Samantha Wood's passion for her work clearly shows and the manner in which she shares her expertise makes me want to study Pilates more and makes me enthusiastic about being a part of this industry. I found myself carrying this book around with me all week and finding every spare moment reading it, re-reading it because this books makes me eager to learn more. Thank you for an exceptional book Samantha Wood! If you are considering buying this book -- BUY IT, I would highly recommend it.
As a Pilates-based Physical Therapist, this book covers the "bread and butter" of what we do in clinic with Pilates based exercises. Descriptions and photos are clear and the book is well organized. Sam comes with a ton of experience, so it's nice to see her work down on paper.
