Yoga Mat Companion (4 book series)

Yoga Mat Companion Series: A Deep Dive into Your Yoga Practice

The Yoga Mat Companion series by Dr. Ray Long is a four-part exploration of the anatomical foundations of various yoga postures. It bridges the gap between Eastern yoga practice and Western scientific knowledge of the body.

Each book focuses on a specific category of poses:

  • Book 1: Vinyasa Flow & Standing Poses – Master the science behind Vinyasa flow and foundational standing postures. Learn how to move with proper alignment and improve your overall practice.
  • Book 2: Hip Openers & Forward Bends – Unlock tight hips and delve into forward bends. This book guides you in safely deepening these postures while understanding the muscles engaged.
  • Book 3: Backbends & Twists – Explore the world of backbends and twists. Gain the knowledge to confidently approach these poses and maximize their benefits.
  • Book 4: Arm Balances & Inversions – Conquer inversions and arm balances! This book breaks down the anatomy to help you achieve these advanced postures safely and effectively.

Throughout the series, Dr. Long utilizes clear illustrations and step-by-step instructions. A unique feature is the “Bandha Yoga Codex,” a five-step process applicable to any pose. This method helps you improve your strength, flexibility, and precision in every aspect of your yoga practice.

Whether you’re a beginner seeking a strong foundation or an experienced yogi looking to refine your practice, the Yoga Mat Companion series offers valuable insights. It empowers you to move with intention, deepen your understanding of the poses, and achieve your yoga goals.

I'm an ex-gymnast, longtime martial artist and new to yoga. Many of the yoga poses are very familiar to me, but this book explains how to get them together into a flow (kind of like a yoga 'kata') and best of all removes any doubts about how to perform them correctly.

I just started reading this and it is awesome. It is written in a very clear and easy to understand language. The illustrations are sharp and again easy to understand. It is important to me to execute positions correctly and to have an understanding of the muscle groups that will be worked. It shows you how to warm up the pose and also little nuances to get all of the correct benefits. I am sure I will page through it over and over again.

I’ve been practicing yoga on and off for well over a decade whether it was on my own or in group classes. But I never felt like I was surpassing a beginner level...until I purchased this book. I have zero background in anatomy but was able to understand most of the concepts just fine. It breaks everything down so simply with in-depth descriptions and images that explain yoga poses in a way I’ve never heard before. Knowing how to properly perform these poses makes a world of difference! I am finally seeing progress in my practice and have a strongly renewed passion for yoga. Thank you, Ray Long! Can’t wait to work my way through the entire series.

EXACTLY what I was looking for! I'll be buying the other in the series. As a slightly experienced yogi, I always want to make sure I'm doing things the proper way. This book tells you that... EXACTLY. Which muscles to engage, which muscles rest, how to modify a pose and even how you transition in vinyasa. I LOVE this book. Cannot stop looking at it. Cannot wait to buy the others. I'm an amateur "do it yourself" rank beginner, and I've found the detailed instructions about skeleton/joint/muscle relationships and which muscles to contract/relax very helpful. Makes yoga fun for people like me who are curious about such matters. Note that the forms are ideal and no beginner should expect or try to duplicate them. If you do not, it is very easy to get injured. Easy does it.

Back bends and twists are carefully broken down into detail so that they become accessible and safe and enjoyable. Solid reference and source for growth into full understanding of how these poses work. Thanks again Ray Long!!!! Essential for yoga teachers. Safety for the knees and back and how to minimize risk of injury are key. To compliment these teachings I would suggest study also of specific modifications for spinal and other joint disease or injury.

I am certainly not a yogi. However, I have enjoyed practicing yoga for years on my own through reading books, doing videos, and a few classes. What I felt I was lacking was the science behind a pose and how to advance through the pose to a more challenging one. Yes, I was "stuck"! This series (quite affordable in the kindle version which I stream from my iPad to my large TV during practice) has literally opened the world of yoga. The explanations on muscle opposition is the key to deepening the pose without harming yourself. I am waking up without muscle soreness after pushing myself through a pose. For once, a doctor has written a book combing his passion and professionalism to educated the rest of us! No matter your level of experience, everyone can benefit from the fabulous illustrations and technical explanations! By far my best Yoga book purchase yet!

All of the Yoga Mat Companion books are a must if you are in the fitness field. I am a NASM certified personal trainer and I use these books constantly. They really helped me learn and UNDERSTAND the muscles of the body and how they work and cues to activate certain ones. You don't need to practice yoga to get the benefits from these books. I do plan on eventually going through yoga teacher training at some point in my career and I know having these will definitely benefit me.

amazing book for every Yoga teacher or student!!

Wow. These books are amazing. I wish I'd had them 30 years ago. Most books on yoga will say, don't do this pose if you have this condition, and that's the end of it. These books tell you every detail of a pose, from how to get started if you're not very flexible, to how to get even more from the pose for very advanced users. I knew these were worth every penny and every minute spent reading them, when I saw something cautioning how you need to do these things in such a way as to not destroy your joints; most books (and an awful lot of teachers out there) don't know how to teach to prevent major joint damage. Dr. Long does.

This book has clarified, and cut through the mystery of "yoga-nese" or "yoga speak" metaphor. Having had to stumble through what "open your heart" means in regards to actually finding the pose has hampered my progress for years. Thanks Yogis. This book actually explains (almost overly so) how to perform the pose in a way that gives almost immediate gains and progression over illiterately aping the pose.

This book is a wonder of modern science and understanding illuminating secrets for the illiterate practitioner.

I love this book because it helps me to identify the muscles that should be engaged in each pose. To a beginner this is really important to getting the most out of each pose. I have to be able to "visualize and go inside my body to communicate what I want to accomplish. Without this road map it would be just a jumble of criss crossing paths. This book does a great job of describing which ones should relax and stretch and which ones should contract.

I have to say I was skeptical ordering this book. I don't know anatomy. I practice yoga in my own home. I have been to one semester of yoga classes while I was in college. I really liked it, and have practiced off and on since. Only recently have I developed a kind of serious interest in getting into the yoga poses correctly and making sure that I am using the correct muscles for the poses as opposed to just "flopping" into them. I find that when I know the pose inside and out, I can actually concentrate on proper alignment, breathing, and using the correct muscles as opposed to what is in my to do list. Which means that I am more "present" in my practice.
I didn't get to look at this book through my library, one of the reasons why I was skeptical. I usually only get books that I have already decided are a worth while investment. So I threw caution to the wind and wound up with a wonderful book.
It goes into how the book should be read and then breaks down poses like Mountain, Tree, Warrior 1 and 2 by:
Telling you their joint position (Mountain = the knees are extended, hips neutral, . . .)
How to prepare for the pose
And what muscles you are using through various stages of the pose with some amazing muscular photos to go along with it.
It also give you some example workouts for vinyasa yoga as well.
Overall my impression: This is great, You can easily focus on proper alinement a pose or two at a time for a week until it becomes natural to your everyday practice. I am buying the rest of the set.

This book shows you how to achieve poses based on anatomy and physiology. It gives great diagrams that show the muscles that are shortened and lengthened in each pose. It gives you cues on which muscles to contract to help relax opposing tight muscles. It explains everything in a way you do not need a background in anatomy to understand. If you do have a background in anatomy or kinesiology it is a great refresher and you will appreciate the diagrams and explanations. I plan to buy the other books in this series as well.

I highly recommend getting this book if you're a yoga instructor wanting to explain the movements of poses via pictures. I use this book as a reference all the time to explain to my own students the muscles involved. I find that most of my students are visual people and seeing pictures says a thousand words. I have many of Ray Long's other books that are used in my classes. Get the book! It's fantastic!

Very useful book about anatomy and yoga postures. You improve your practice more you study it. There are some other books by the same author. All the books are very accurate, precise. You can learn about your body, your muscles, not in theory, but, following his explenations, practicing. The pictures are very clear and only watching them you understand what are the steps to approach every single Asana. You can find this book very stimulating for your practice.I recommend this number 4 and the previous 1,2,and 3.

Dr. Long does.

I expect I'll be getting great value from this series for many years to come.

Just ordered/received all 4 books. Quite impressed with the anatomy lessons, not just about the muscles but about the using of the opposite muscles to stretch deeper. I have injured before from doing too much yoga, IMPROPERLY. Now I am more aware of the right mucles to be used in different poses. For example, I can feel a big difference even in tadasana - feet are dragged in, while thighs out, and the muscles on the big toes are activated. My pose seems so much stronger.

The books are well made, with thick papers, and the pages are set opened easily (just like having a spiral bound book).

I love this whole series. The illustrations are perfect - detailed enough that you can really tell what you're looking at but not overwhelming. I have a weekly yoga session with a couple of friends and we've been picking one pose a week to work through, using all the instructions. Sometimes all we can do is stare at the illustration, imagine where the muscle is on our bodies, and work on the intention to flex or extend it. But over weeks of working with it, we're all finding movement where there was none before. I'm also thrilled with how much anatomy I'm absorbing through the pose illustrations and instructions.

I am so pleased with this first book in the Yoga Mat Companion series. I will most certainly be purchasing the complete set.

The step-by-step illustrated instructions for each pose includes a preparation sequence, followed by the step-by-step process of achieving the pose with detailed explanation of the bio-mechanics of the movements involved. The illustrations are excellent and detailed and the narrative is easy to understand. Not only are the muscles which are involved in each pose shown clearly in the illustrations, but each muscle is "color coded" to show whether it is engaged or stretching.

As for the quality of the book: When I first placed my order, I was a little disappointed that this book was not available in "hard cover". I prefer the hard cover format because I feel it is more durable. I was pleasantly surprised when I received this "paperback" book. The cover is made of very thick card stock and the pages are very high quality "slick" paper. The binding seems similar to hard cover books. I feel this is a very durable book that will last as long as a hard cover book. Also, the book "lays flat" which makes it very convenient to use while practicing the techniques presented.

Ray Long is our new best friend. every book that has been published has been excellent. This new series, I reference this as really the new format..miss the longer version as You could sit on the mat and the book would stay open..ohwell. Gives pictures of what the body looks like if your just starting out as well as the final pose as it should be. For a teacher it is great information, to see someone working on the hip opener and better ways to correct a posture. I'll buy every book he comes out with, just the information I've been looking for.

this series of books is the best detailed info i've seen on the postures. There are 3 ways I understand poses here. Names are given for each muscle that either stretches or flexes, also pictures of said muscles in different hues of blue and red to show where intensity is, also the joints involed and the direction the muscles move the ligements. While it could be overwhelming for some there is a lot of growing room and so many details to continue to work towards better posture. Even the sugested vinyasa flow has some weight to how to order poses and it gives reference to the chakras. But what I really like is how scientific it seems. It even gives several variations that can be used for injuries or preparation for each pose. What I really like is how it details how to use reciprocal inhibition and the golgi tendon to go deaper into poses- which I might call a simple shift of awareness to push into the pain without getting hurt. As well as a heap of detail about creating bandhas via co-activation for stabelization. One thing I dont see is much detail to get into the individual poses. But you can get that from a number of other good books. Once you're in the basic pose this book will provide much detail to continue to explore, play and increase awareness and form. The 4 books in the series have minimal overlap and the portions that do use different poses for the examples. Definately check these out!
