    It’s a straight to the point, yet packed full with all the necessary knowledge, to proceed correctly with Pilates. I would add, this book is a great background for those that are in need for clinical Pilates. There’s a lot of clinical input in this book. I’m a qualified healthcare and I’ve read several books of its kind. This one and Elisa Whiters’s ‘Back to life’ are my companions in improving my chronic back condition

I wish it had more poses but it has almost all your basics and gives a great visual of the muscles being used and what they are doing (stretching or flexing) Love this book for my practice.

This is a great book with information about yoga equipment, 20 basic yoga poses, what physical issues the poses address, and a short explanation of how the pose originated in the yogic tradition. It is well written, concise, and to the point. I highly recommend it to any senior taking up yoga. I plan to follow the poses outlined on the days I do not have class.

    I’m not a Pilaties teacher but I use APPI Pilates as both exercises and pain relief. I’m also a nurse of over 44 yrs, an academic and suffer of back pain and congenital spine problems, so in all I have been looking forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed, it’s well laid out, linked to contemporary evidence and follows the APPI instructions that I have been used to with both Physio instructions and the APPI TV classes ( of which Tracey teaches on). The anatomy sections are brilliant in showing how it all links to our body, the instructions are clear, I learnt new things and consolidated what I thought was correct. The range from novice to advanced is clear, some advanced moves I will never be able to achieve but in all a fantastic complement to my Pilaties kit. Bought in my husbands name but used in my own - Sharon

    Went through an entire personal training program, a program that was apparently supposed to be one of the best accredited programs out there, and their break down of anatomy and physiology was so hard to follow, and I was left confused, and frustrated. Now that I’m studying yoga, I picked up this book and within 30 minutes of reading it I have a better understanding of how the body works, and this book is basically explaining the same exact thing my personal training program was supposed to, but in a much more efficient way. I’ve had so many “Aha, now I get it moments.” The pictures are great, although I do see why some reviews state it’s hard to see exactly what part of the body is being pointed to. Either way, 5 stars, this book is very helpful.

    I’ve been a yoga practitioner for around 15 years and I really enjoy this book. It’s a great tool for helping improve form, postures, and a great way to learn more about common poses. With Covid I’ve moved more to a home practice vs studio and this book is helpful in keeping me interested and continuing to build on my practice. Has helpful alignment tips and very informative when it comes to what muscles are engaged in each posture and what’s going on in your body during them.

    I will be the first to admit that things like math and science and anatomy confuse the shit out of me. During my yoga teacher training through My vVinyasa Practice, understanding yoga anatomy concepts wasn't coming very easily to me. I even tried to watch YouTube videos to help explain, but I just couldn't get it. Every resource I came across in the past either tried to explain too much (resulting in further confusion) or didn't explain it enough.

    I knew this book existed, but didn't want to really pay the price at first. Completely understandable. I finally bit the bullet and bought it recently, and it was one of the best financial decisions (and investments) I've ever made. The pictures are beautifully drawn, the language written throughout the book is easy to understand yet scientific and informative, and it gave me more information than my current YTT does.

    Ann, thank you SO much for this fantastic educational resource. This book is so incredibly helpful, and I am so grateful for you for putting something like this together. Everybody needs to read this if they are interested in yoga anatomy, even if they are not necessarily yoga practitioners. Thank you again! <3

    I am thoroughly enjoying reading through Science of Yoga and using it as a reference as well. The pictures are fantastic! I love the thorough explanations given for the poses and the anatomy. I really enjoy the specific to yoga sections of information as well and have been learning so much. The question and answer section in the back was a great addition because they are very commonly asked questions and, again, great pictoral references with straight forward explanations. Honestly, it’s the best yoga book that I have read so far.

    As a yoga instructor, this has been a great resource for myself and my classes. I love being able to simply explain to students how a breath practice or pose can benefit their bodies/minds/lives. It can be hard for students, particularly new ones, to conceptualize what they’re doing/why and this book has really helped me with new info/ways of explaining concrete benefits. I love the intersection of eastern philosophy and western science/medicine. Highly recommend for new or experienced yogis.

    Ann's Science of Yoga book is amazing! As a yoga teacher myself, I use this book to build my yoga sequences around a peak pose. The anatomy colored visuals and detailed descriptions of poses help me better understand what muscles I need to engage vs. lengthen at the beginning of my class so my students are ready to try the peak pose! Plus, it contains amazing information about the general body systems such as nervous system, respiratory system, etc. to understand how yoga can benefit. All around great for a student, instructor, or 200 HR trainer!

    I love this book. With the pandemic, I was finally able to sign up for a 200 hrs yoga teacher training program and this book has been such a game changer in understanding poses.
    In addition to yoga lover I’m also a nurse. And this book helped me understand anatomy (specifically) better than my courses in nursing school. The images are so detailed and she really explains what action the muscles should be doing with the poses.

I recently graduated from my 200 hour training course to become a yoga instructor, and I was feeling like I needed and wanted more to cue the body properly from an anatomical viewpoint. This book was recommended to me by one of my fellow yogi students, and I’m so happy I bought this book! The color graphs pin pointing the muscle groups and bones being used in specific poses and how we as instructors can cue to the body (every body) gave me even more courage to feel strong in how I teach!

    I highly recommend this book for instructors and students who are looking to understand more of how each pose is affecting the body and how you can better understand what parts should and shouldn’t be used!

    Author Ann Swenson, in the forward of her book Science of Yoga, straightforwardly explains the reasons she wrote this book: Yoga research is in its infancy, but the quality and quantity of yoga research has increased, resulting in evidence of yoga's benefits. Ms Swenson's intention is to share research findings regarding yoga's effects on not only ones musculoskeletal system but all body systems.

    The Asana (poses) section of the book guides exploration of what's going on inside the body while practicing yoga. Each of around 30 Asana has at least two views, eg, front and back; often, side views are provided. Red-, blue-, and purple-colored muscles clearly indicate what's being stretched or strengthened. This section is packed with details, both in print and diagramed.

    Other sections of the book touch on aspects of human anatomy system beside the musculoskeletal, such as the lymphatic and immune systems, respiratory system, nervous system and so on, showing how other body systems are involved in a yoga practice. A questions and answers section briefly yet effectively addresses issues such as spinal care in yoga, yoga for different life stages, meditation, stress/mental well being, and chronic pain. This section even touches on yoga philosophy.

    The book also includes a 'Cautions' section that can help a practitioner modify poses based on needs and health conditions.

    The book contains a table of contents (front), and a glossary and an index at the back.

    Science of Yoga is very good at explaining that yoga is adaptable for pretty much everyone. Regardless if a practitioner is spiritual, religious, agnostic, or whatever, studies and research indicate and suggest that yoga can help one find better health, more peace.

    I look forward to more from Ann Swenson. I'm counting on her continuing her amalgamation of research and studies that explain and prove (rather than "indicate" or "suggest") what she wisely presents in Science of Yoga.

    Science of Yoga is the best book of yoga anatomy and physiology that I have seen. I ordered this book after reading an article by the author in a yoga magazine. Within a month of receiving my copy, I purchased copies for three teachers and a long-time practitioner. Everyone has been very impressed with it.

    Most yoga anatomy books focus primarily on muscles and skeleton in the various poses. Science of Yoga does that better than most, with excellent illustrations and detailed call outs. But it goes deeper and wider than what other books cover. Each pose begins with a two-page "Big Picture" overview, which is followed by another two pages called "Closer Look." For Cat-Cow, there are two pages focused on Cat, two pages on Cow, and another two pages on the movement from Cat to Cow; not only spinal flexion and extension, but how the movement facilitates breathing, body awareness, and the mind-body connection.

    Beyond bones, joints, and muscles, I appreciate how author Ann Swanson covers all the systems of the body (circulatory, nervous, lymphatic, endocrine, digestive). Having taught yoga for ten years, I knew little or nothing about these systems. Science of Yoga attempts to cover everything that science can tell us about each system of the body in relation to yoga. I appreciate how the author encourages a shift “to a yogic perspective...of unity” (all of the systems functioning together).

    The main focus of my teaching is wellness, and Science of Yoga serves that focus very well. Science of Yoga also meets my needs because I am generally agnostic about the traditional Indian-based claims of yoga benefits. Since we have the benefit of modern science, I want science-based evidence before I pass a claim like "shoulder stand stimulates the thyroid" on to my students.

    The final section of the book (Q&As) is a series of two-page articles on how science informs us about joints and flexibility, spinal care, meditation, Savasana, stress, the brain and mental well-being, chronic pain, and other topics).

    For teacher or practitioner, this is a book to study and, over time, increase one's mastery of yoga.

I bought this book to know more about yoga in general but also because I have never really understood the mind and body connection required to do the exercises correctly. This book goes into detail on every asana and how each muscle is being used. It really opened my mind to feel every muscle interacting to do the exercise correctly and after only a few I felt a lot better. I look forward to reading the rest and really getting into yoga because I believe it will help me regain the strength I need in my back!

    I am starting to Co-Lead a yoga teacher training this upcoming summer and this book has been an absolute keystone for my curriculum writing. As a retired Biology Prof. I was extremely excited to see the depth at which this book is written and beautifully illustrated. As a YTT teacher, I am equally thrilled to see how approachable and accessible the information is, for those who are science experts to those who may be intimidated by the subject. As yoga becomes quite popular in the West, this book is a important glimpse into the "why" of yoga- why does this make me feel good? Why/how do I grow stronger and lengthen my muscles?     Such a great book! So detailed and informative. I have my 200 YTT certificate and feel like this should be part of every training! Wish I had it in mine. Learning so many details. She starts off with the different systems in our bodies and how they connect to yoga, and goes through the different poses after that, pointing out little details, outlining muscles that are stretched/engaged, etc. Seriously blown away and I have become an instant fan of this author.

I also teach anatomy in yoga teacher training programs and offer yoga anatomy workshops and this has without a doubt become my top recommended yoga anatomy resource. The illustrations are the most beautiful I've seen in any anatomy book and I love that the author took the time to address the effect of yoga on all the systems of the body vs just musculoskeletal. This book is a great resource for yoga teaches and students to understand what is happening in the body during yoga asana and I appreciate that the information is offered in such an accessible way, it's just as appropriate for healthcare professionals with a strong anatomy background as it is for those that are totally new to anatomy!

    This book can be useful for novices who are learning the basics and to those who are expanding their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the practice of yoga. No matter your level of understanding and practice, you will always find something new with pearls of wisdom throughout. Ann Swanson's attention to detail, her love of teaching and her inquisitive mind come together beautifully to inspire others to seek answers and to ask the "whys" and "hows" of yoga. This is a fun and informative book to add to your collection and would be a wonderful gift to yourself or to the lovers of yoga in your life.

    This is my newest favorite anatomy book! Ann Swanson has created a wonderful resource that contains just the right amount of information to help you understand what is happening in the body during the practice of yoga. Not only does it give easy-to-understand information about the various systems in the body, but it also shows some blueprint poses detailing which muscles are being stretched, engaged or both. Use this book to increase your general knowledge about the body/yoga connection which can help inspire cues you use during classes or use it to help find the best postures for your Body Focused classes. This will be one of my go-tos from now on—I think you’ll love it! ✨

    This is a great book for anyone looking to learn more about what is going on in your body during your practice. The book is extremely informative and well put together. The illustrations are amazing, showing key mussel and joint engagement along with proper alignment. My only complaint would be the fact that some of the illustrations are hindered by the binding of the book. If I honestly cared that much I would return this version and purchase the spiral bound one but I’m content with what I have. Something to possibly consider before hitting the purchase tab but either way this is an excellent book for beginners to instructors. I consider it an essential book for anyone looking to further their yoga knowledge.

    What I have learned most from this book is how all the muscles work together and I am able to actually feel them in my body. I am glad the muscle images don't look so scary and gross like most anatomy books! The thing I love most about this book is that I am never going to be a yoga instructor (and I don't have to be) but I can still learn about the science of yoga and how it works. This book motivates me to practice. I didn't know that a book could improve my yoga practice so much!

    I'm still new to yoga, but I've felt the benefit of practising yoga so much. I felt more stable, for lack of a better word. Physically healthier, with calmer mind. As a medical doctor, things associated with health always fascinate me and make me curious on how they make human healthier. Lots and lots of yoga books available out there, yet I only found this one to be very fascinating in terms of scientifically explaining what's happening in our body when we do yoga, as well as in certain common asanas. Reading it doesn't make me a yoga guru, yet understanding what happen in my body when I do asanas helps me in correcting myself.

    This book is an essential new resource for practitioners of all levels! Swanson respects the old Yogic traditions, and at the same time is guided by a firm basis in medical science. I like the simple way the illustrations show all of the muscles, including which are engaged and which are stretching - and which are doing both!
    All the detailed biological illustrations and explanations that are included on most pages are so informative! It’s a great resource and I wish I had had it in my YTT! Going to recommend it to my studio!

    Love how comprehensive it is in terms of both the anatomy and physiology In general, but also in the context of yoga...Awesome. The illustrations are superb, and the information dense. Techniques such as pranayama and mudras are explained physiologically, which added more legitimacy in my mind. Also love that the author emphasizes the importance of a plant based diet in terms of health, along with the many other scientifically proven benefits to mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing that results from this practice. I haven't completed it yet, but am certain it will be a help to be both now and into the future. Will be recommending it to my YTT instructors asap. A*** #instantclassic

    A great simple anatomy text for use when studying yoga. Although I had the privilege to study human anatomy over 30 years it is good to have a very simple reference as a reminder. It also allows you to build a picture of what is happening in poses as you instruct. Would recommend as a basic guide to anyone serious about their yoga practice who wants to study more about how it works in western medical terms.

    Lots of yoga anatomy books are visually appealing, but I struggled with most of them because they were often overwhelming in terms of information. With Ann Swanson's book, I finally found one that wisely (I think) narrows this huge topic down by looking at the most common poses and using them as doorways into the subject matter.

    There is so much I like about the book, but as a yoga teacher what I find particularly helpful is the "Alignment" box for each pose. It points out specifically where to focus and suggests how to move/engage that area so that the anatomy & physiology you're learning can be APPLIED to improve your practice. This helps you start using what you're learning right away, even as you continue to study why those cues work. I actually use the Alignment boxes as a resource for helpful cues in my classes, and it's definitely improved both my own practice and those of my students.

    My hope is that the success of this book will allow Ann to continue to write more of them, covering more poses and expanding on this excellent material. Having a series of books by her would be a wonderful addition to my yoga teaching bookshelf!

    You know how most books with great scientific content are dry? And those that are "prettier" lack content - well Ann Swanson simply NAILED both with this book!

    I've only had it for a month or so but I know it will be a staple in my resource tool set for sure. When I say I love it, I mean it - the content, the layout, the texture of the pages, the colors, the illustrations - EVERYTHING. Anatomy is just one thing it covers, she also talks about alignment, variations, mind-body connection, risks or benefits to multiple body systems...seriously - just buy it already!

    This is the anatomy book I wished I had as a training tool for my certification. I am a massage therapist and a RYT200 and I teach anatomy to folks working towards their yoga certification... I reach for this book again and again.
    The information is accessible for all levels of human body knowledge, the art is very helpful. Instead of having 6 anatomy books in front of me for various views of joints and attachments, I use Ann’s book.
    I find myself using her explanations during my classes.
    A must for every yoga teacher...

    I started yoga teacher training just after the first of the year. While researching different text books, I came across this book and thought I'd give it a look. Boy, has it turned out to be a wonderful resource!
    I love the way that yoga poses and their affects on the body are presented clearly. Anatomy and physiology concepts have been easier to visualize though the clear illustrations too. This book will prove to be helpful when I plan my yoga sequences.

    This fascinating book combines impressively simple explanations of how yoga impacts your body and how to perform each yoga pose with the in-depth illustrations for which DK books are known. I say “impressively simple” because the author, Ann Swanson, managed to condense a large amount of yoga research and anatomical information into a compact, highly readable format. The book begins with a primer on human anatomy and physiology – there’s a two-page spread on each of the major systems of the body, such as the digestive system and the skeletal system, along with details about how yoga can impact each system. As someone who hasn’t taken an anatomy class in about 18 years, I really appreciated this refresher! Next, there are two-page spreads on each yoga pose, or asana – the asanas are organized into the seated asanas, standing asanas, inversion asanas, and floor asanas. The incredible full-body illustrations of each pose show which muscles are engaged and/or stretched by each pose. As a newcomer to yoga, I especially appreciate the alignment diagram for each pose, which provides detailed instructions on exactly how you should position your body to perform the pose safely and effectively (i.e. forearms should be rotated inward). Speaking of safety, there are variations suggested for most poses to accommodate injuries and preferences. The third part of the book, the Q&A section, covers topics from “Stress,” to “Cautions” (poses to avoid if you have certain medical conditions), to “On the frontiers of science” (a lovely summary of the process of health research and how to evaluate any yoga studies you hear about in the news). Finally, I love that the author included a bibliography, which is organized by chapter – Ann Swanson provides the full citations to the scientific studies she references in the text, so you can easily look up the study yourself if you want more information. Overall, this is a beautifully done book, which I recommend highly to everyone from yoga newbies to yoga teachers!

    As a yoga teacher, practitioner and yoga therapist in training, I have bookshelf upon bookshelf lined with books about anatomy, physiology, yoga anatomy, spirituality, yoga and spirituality, and ancient yogic texts, but absolutely nothing like Ann Swanson’s “Science of Yoga.” Every single one of these subjects is encapsulated within this book.

    She has weaved together science, yoga, anatomy, spirituality and yogic principles in such a beautiful and masterful way that this book is one that every yoga teacher, practitioner, teacher trainer and yoga therapist needs to have their bookshelves, and even better always at arms’ length to refer to and integrate into their living and teaching yoga.

    Visually, this book is stunning. But more so it is accessible and user-friendly. Visual learners will eat up this book immediately. Its format allows the reader to use as a reference for a single specific subject area - or to be read cover to cover. Swanson builds a solid foundation in "Science of Yoga” with exactly "that" - the science - more specifically anatomy. She then continues to build upon the science with the yoga, and then coming full circle with an informative and insightful Q & A, and ending the book by connecting the dots of science and spiritual concepts and teachings that are the foundation of yoga.

    As this being Swanson’s first book, and seeing what great work she has already brought to the table, I can only imagine what body of work is yet to come from her and am eager to watch (and read) her contributions to this field.

    I love this anatomy book. I’ve made it a required book for anatomy in the 200 hour teacher training at my studio. There is a wealth of information that is often forgotten about when approaching anatomy for yoga. All systems of the body are included and the information is broken into small digestible bits. Often books that cover this wide of a scope of information become far too tedious to read and follow along. It’s clear the author has taken much time and consideration to determine what information and at what level of detail to include. If you’re an anatomy nerd this is a great reference especially for explaining complicated topics to your students. If you’re a new or aspiring teacher or even a student, this book is the perfect place to start your anatomy learning.

    My bookshelves are filled with beautifully written and wonderfully informative books on everything yoga. Some would think I have all the books I could ever possibly need or want on the subject of yoga. Not so. I am pretty excited about this new book - Science of Yoga - by Ann Swanson. It's the kind of book that those new to yoga and those who have practiced for years will want to have as a resource - a book they will refer to again and again. The book is brilliantly laid out and very impressive in its scope. Anatomy and physiology has been simplified and broken down to make it user friendly and understandable for virtually anyone. It's fact filled and food for the curious mind. It's the kind of book that can be consumed in bits and pieces but I recommend reading the whole book first so you don't miss any of the great information that this author shares. Anatomy and physiology is just the beginning of this book. It offer's so much more. Pictures clearly showing various asanas/poses in seated, standing, inversions and floor that depict joints, the muscles engaged, muscles engaging while stretching, and the muscles stretching. There's more - there's tips, variations and benefits to each pose...and still again, there's more. A question's and answer's section to guide you into deeper understandings and how to utilize and access the information and research out there. Another section goes over precautions and suggestions for specific health issues. The glossary included is a wonderful addition to this book. Like the rest of the book, it is clear and concise. This will be the book on your bookshelf that you will go back to again and again and again...

    My favorite parts about this book is the beginning and ending. I am a visual learner and to have the science of yoga created into visuals is something that I’ve been waiting for. Thank You Ann for spending the time to create this treasure. For the anatomy section I appreciate the sections “looking closer” and “big picture”. The colors used in this book are appealing to the eye as well. The yoga concepts laid out in visually appealing diagrams is worth the purchase alone.
