New Functional Training for Sports

Train to perform at the highest level with the lowest risk of injury. New Functional Training for Sports, Second Edition, produces the best results on the court, field, track, and mat, not just in the weight room.

Michael Boyle, one of the world’s leading sport performance coaches, presents the concepts, methods, exercises, and programs that maximize athletes’ movements in competition. A series of functional assessments help in determining the design of a specific plan for each athlete. Self-reinforcing progressions in exercises for the lower body, core, upper body, and ultimately total body give athletes the balance, proprioception, stability, strength, and power they require for excelling in their sports. Sample programs assist in the customization process and cover each aspect of preparation for physical performance.

Boyle also draws on the latest research and his wealth of experience to offer programming advice and recommendations on foam rolling, stretching, and dynamic warm-ups.

New Functional Training for Sports goes beyond traditional exercise descriptions and explanations, incorporating full-color, high-definition composites of foundational movements as well as online access to video demonstrations, commentary, and analysis of key exercises.

New Functional Training for Sports is a refined and expanded version of Boyle’s original work published more than a decade previously. This edition offers the most current functional training expertise to apply to your specific purposes.

Note: A code for accessing online videos is included with all print books.

It's always fun to read through seasoned trainer's findings... Michael Boyle puts together a great work of concepts and exercises to create a solid framework of how functional training drastically helps your athletes. Another great point is that even if you are not training athletes, a lot of these functional philosophies can still apply to your clients. Great piece of work right here!

Before that book I wasn't whole.
I've been going to gym for decades with an "employee" mentality. It's when you have to specialize yourself (overwork) to death.
So you work on your biceps etc. for who knows why. Ignoring the fact that your body is broken. You life is broken. You work for somebody else.

This book opened my mind. The way to fix your life is to find your weaknesses and fix them. That creates balance. You become whole again. I am not even sure how to explain the importance of being yourself of importance of being whole. It's like you live your life again. It's like you are free and don't care anymore that life is not fair. It's like you are not a slave anymore, not an employee. You become your own man.

I teach a variety of group fitness classes and ordered this book to learn more about functional training. I was hoping it would help identify areas I could train more so I'm better able to perform in my classes. It's a very practical book with some theory and lots of pictures, fitness test ideas, and diagrams with different routines and exercises you can do for all the major muscle groups. I enjoyed reading it and have incorporated some of the techniques into my training program and also into the classes I teach.

Just like Boyle' s first book, he again is able to share highly relevant and straight forward information about training for sports. The second edition touches on previous topics, but I found that it was NOT repetitive information from his first editions. The included online features and video examples of various exercises and routines was a useful and technologically modern addition. I had no trouble accessing or using those additional features.

If you are looking for a theory or science heavy textbook, this is not it. If you are more interested in specific exercise progression, techniques and cues, this might be a tool for you to use.

Okay, if you are simply looking for an exercise resource to help you get your swoll on and hit max GAINZ then this book is probably NOT for you. However if you are interesting in learning how the body moves and, more importantly, how to exercise to maximize your movement (and performance) potential then hit the 'buy' button immediately.

Mike is one of the most well -respected strength coaches in the Strength and Conditioning community. He has helped win 2 national championships in hockey and has worked with numerous professional athletes as well as developing systems that help younger athletes earn college scholarships.

Even if you are not an athlete, you should be training like one. Mike's method is to enhance the mobility and stability of the body before increasing the strength - when it comes to performance automobiles you don't want to drop in a large engine unless you have the steering, suspension and brakes capable of handing the excess power, conditioning programs are the same - fine tune the chassis before boosting the horsepower. If you don't have a formal background/education in exercise science you may not understand (or care) the 'why' behind what makes his exercises so effective, but you will definitely be able to apply the how immediately.

As an author of numerous fitness/exercise science articles Mike is one of my go-to resources when I want good information for how to use exercise to change the body. Buy this book, you'll be glad you did!

I highly recommend this book if you want a little better of an understanding in sports performance training and the why's behind unilateral versus bilateral training. I am new to Functional Fitness but I am seeing substantial strength gains since I began doing the routines in this book.

Single arm and leg exercises really makes a lot of sense for developing sports performance because there aren't many sports that are performed bi-laterally according to the author.

I am a older athlete that's pretty banged up psychically and I am not having any problems performing the progressions demonstrated online and described in the book. That's right, there is a online component that you gain access to with the purchase of the book!

I would gladly do business with this seller again.

A lot of coaches/authors would charge 10x or more for the information and videos (kindle edition) contained in this book. This book has cutting edge information from one of the best strength & conditioning coaches in the business. It truly is a steal and a no brainer in my opinion.

One of the best books out there ever on functional training. I have been indoctrinating these same principles of training into the heads of my medical clinic gym trainers. I am a fan as well as friend of Mark Verstegen and a former volunteer physician at the OTC in Colorado Springs in addition to a ten year stint as a physician consultant to the University of Arizona. With a long resume in biomechanics (M.S.) and sports medicine I have regarded the bulk of training books as mediocre if not a source of pontification for people struck with the light of their own ego. Not Mr. Boyle! He combines wisdom from experience with science and gets results! I think the most important concept my staff learned was the use of single leg exercises and specific body weight exercises to promote hip and shoulder stability and flexibility with the side benefit of reduced risk of injury. We are using his progressions in our medical clinic gym where we train elite high school basketball players in Phoenix as well as overweight adults who want to lose weight and improve fitness and human performance. In other words safety is an issue (and one that a lot of Crossfit gyms don't seem to understand). I am 68 and still power lift but am often reluctant to introduce young or old athletes to Olympic lifts or power lifts due to inherent risk of injury even when performed correctly. Mike quotes reputable resources (Dan John, Mark Verstegen, Alwyn Cosgrove, Gray Cook, etc) based on legitimate knowledge that add to his credibility compared to those for whom the game of name dropping does not change the fact they are borderline experts. Kudos to him. I recommend this book highly! Glen Halvorson MD, Medical Director StartClinic.com.

Great book with awesome information. Mike breaks down everything from what functional training is, to upper and lower body training consists of. I also liked how he gives guidelines on how to determine strength for you or your athletes. I also love how he implements excersies from physical therapy as well. I recommend to friends

Tremendous edition! Boyle is THE authority on modern functional training for athletes of all ability levels. The second edition refines the first edition by including Boyle's years worth of additional training and testing of movements, principals, and progressions since the original Functional Training for Sports was published. That's what's so great about Boyle's publications: he seemingly holds nothing back. Rather than rely on theory, Boyle educates the reader on what programming principals and movements actually produce results and why. Highly recommend for coaches and athletes alike. You will not be disappointed, although you may find yourself rethinking your current programming.

I'm definitely old school when it comes to sports. I always believed that playing a sport was the best way to get better. As I've progressed through the years, it's clear that I was wrong. Now I know that I need to do as much conditioning as I do practice for my sports (tennis, table tennis and aikido). This book is a great resource of exercises for all sports and even maintaining fitness and flexibility as one ages (I'm in this group for sure). Some of the exercises can be daunting and that's ok. Don't expect to pick them all up at once. Just find some that find you goals and add them to you fitness routine. You'll be glad you did.

Another home run by Mike Boyle. If you are in the health & fitness field, regardless of profession, this is a must read. I am one of the hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals whom Mike has helped with his publishings. Mike's progressive leadership in an ever-evolving practice is what you as a clinician or practitioner should aspire to be and do. Don't wait, order this book (and anything else published with Mike's name on it) and soak up all the information you can. You won't regret it!

Book seems fine (excellent), but if you were looking forward to watching the videos, they don't work on Kindle Fire HDX... The play button is there but on pressing it, it shows a static picture. (Update: the YouTube has many more videos than in the book so that's a good complement to the book, though I wish the book had direct links to those videos). Maybe in the next edition of this book, it will be fixed. The book content is excellent.
