Hatha Yoga Illustrated

    This book is great. Totally user-friendly. Poses are clear. The book will stay open pretty easily if you need to look at it while you're trying a pose. The font in the book is a great size, especially the instructions, which are larger and kind of bold (can read pretty easily without my reading glasses). I've resisted the idea of doing yoga partly because it seems kind of trendy, and partly because I have never been very limber, but it's to the point of "have to," I think, for physical health and comfort. Even though I know there will be plenty I won't be able to do easily, and things I probably shouldn't try, there is a lot in this book that is very helpful, and the format and layout are fantastic.

    This book is great because it explains basic asanas and information about yoga, without adhering to any specific type of yoga. I've read endless books on yoga, and most of them are either about specific type of yoga such as power yoga, or they are taught by a specific yogi that tries to teach you their method. Over time I realized the best way to practice is based on my own intuition rather than a specific method. This book helps me understand each asana in an encyclopedia type format. The full color photos make it easy and pleasant to read.

Each pose comes with a ton of information, including countraindications and variations. Introduction has a little history on yoga- I'm still reading through it.     I love this book. Unlike some other books, they show poses as I might hope to do them sometime within the next 5 years, not as done by somebody with a natural gift who had been working on them their entire life. The layout of the pages is very clean and clear, with arrows pointing at body parts with text saying how that body part should be held. There are also pictures of gentle versions for most of the poses. I use this book every day to check my poses and make sure I am doing them correctly.

    Nice and simple, good introduction. The price is impossible to beat, and therefore attractive to a beginner. I think this is a nice alternative to Light on Yoga as some of Iyengar's poses are horrifying to even advanced yogis. This does offer some more advanced poses, but they are reasonable. One could work out of this exclusively for a very long time with little shortcomings.

I am so excited as this book is exactly was I hoped for! Each page is a clear picture of one pose with the name, explanation of muscles worked, modifications, ect. Just what I needed!     I love this book. It takes you step by step through postures, helping you to understand how you get into the posture as well as your alignment once in the posture. It has plenty of pictures as well, so you don't have to depend on the descriptions, although the descriptions are well written. This book is great for people who practice at home and want to make sure that they understand how the pose should flow.

    This book is everything I hoped it would be. It is a great beginner or refresher book for Hatha Yoga. I had done Yoga several years ago, but wanted to refresh my skills so that I could add Yoga to my fitness teaching. This had to be the best choice I could have made. The book begins with discussions of the various aspects of Yoga and had a lengthy series of pages to illustrate various poses and the simplification for each. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to do Yoga on their own or for use as a reference.

    Simple yet detailed. Great photos and explanations of the postures. One of my favorite yoga books!! Love the resources at the back of the book and greatly appreciate the handful of yoga routines provided as well. The book is a great stand alone book if you are on a budget and/or you want to grasp a good understanding of yoga and postures without all the elaborate details and in-depth study required for teaching and training.

    I don't have time to go to a regular yoga class because my schedule changes so frequently, so this book has been so helpful. It's nice to create my own routine using this book, I use it all the time.

    Even though I already know a lot about breathing and meditation, it was great to read more about it in this book - along with some history of different yoga types. This book would be great for beginners, but it is also equally great for people who are more familiar with yoga.

    I actually discovered this book as the required text for my college level Beginning Yoga class. It gives a nice overview of the spiritual side of Yoga, something that many folks might not be familiar with. It also gives a very well rounded instruction on the practice of the Asanas, or poses. It is not a replacement for an instructor though. As there are a number of things that one can do wrong in Yogic practice, an instructor is crucial for any beginner.

    this book gives a good overview of yoga as a physical exercise, showing most of the positions - how to perform them correctly, what to avoid, when not to do the position, what is every particular position good for etc.

    There is even an adjustment for a beginner who cannot perform the full extent of the position easily... so they can improve step by step :)

    Very suitable for professionals as well, as they can really learn what to be aware of in special health conditions of the clients. not every position is suitable for everyone, especially when having some physical problem.

    one of the things I like the most about this book is its simplicity. The language is simple and clear, and the illustrations are very, well, illustrative. The authors provide a large number of asanas, as well as a couple of sequences. Instructions regarding looking direction are provided, along with benefits and contraindications. Those are brief, but very clear, and practical for those who intend to use this book on their own.
    Although the names of the asanas have been "anglicized" while one would rather have them in their Sanskrit-like form (i.e., with the appropriate diacritics etc.), this is surely not a real "problem". Hence, 5 stars.

    I'm recently new to yoga and I didn't want to go to a class. This book really helped me start up, go at my own pace, feel what was right for me. I do the workouts in the back of the book (which I love) and get to hold poses for varying amounts of time depending on what i want to stretch and what feels good to me. I refer back to the pose instructional pages very often which are extremely helpful. I highly recommend this book.

    I am not much for classes and the like. Last year when I decided to join Weight Watchers and amp up my work out schedule I decided to try Pilates, so I bought a fantastic book called The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler. I found that it was amazing for building my core, but I wanted to add a yoga dynamic to get me focused and balanced (literally and figuratively). I bought this book, and six months later, I have learned to incorporate nearly all of the moves into a Pilates/Yoga fusion that has greatly improved my muscle tone, breathing, focus and balance.
    Not only does Hatha Yoga Illustrated offer photographs of various poses (and the succession in which you need to achieve them) but also offers in-depth descriptions about gentle variations (for beginners or people with injuries etc. that may not be able to achieve a pose as is), breathing, and the ailments that each pose has the potential to relieve. The book also offers a bit about the philosophies of yoga. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the book offers, at the back, a number of yoga sequences/routines you can put into practice once you are familiar and comfortable with the individual poses.
    At the age of 38, I am literally in the best shape of my life. Through Pilates and Yoga I have been able to achieve a toned and slender body without the use (and potential injury factor) of weight training. This book has proven invaluable to me and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for an introduction to Yoga. I've never been more limber, flexible and focused. And all this from two books (The Pilates Body and Hatha Yoga Illustrated). If you work well on your own and are motivated to change for the better, you need look no further than this book for a terrific start.
    I would suggest buying a yoga mat if you don't have one already...

    I am not new to yoga so I am familiar with many poses poses. This book is a really great guide to help me practice yoga at home, at my own pace. This book gives the reader a brief breakdown of the poses, as well as modifications which is graet for beginners. I would not recommend this book for someone with no yoga experience as some of the poses can be hard to replicate with the descriptions provided. Overall I think this is a great yoga book.

    Great book. Just what my son wanted. The illustrations are very easily interpreted & can be mimicked exactly. The descriptions for each yoga position are easy to understand, & so are the reasons for the different positions, along with the meditation ritual for each position. The book arrived very quickly. My son, who is a Certified Personal Trainer, loves the book.

    I bought a copy of this book for myself many years ago. When I lost that copy, I bought myself another one. Recently, I had a copy sent to my dad (he's a beginner yogi). This book is perfect for beginners and more advanced yoga practitioners. It gives "gentle" variations to postures as well as many more advanced options. I can't say enough about this book. I love it!

    As a beginning yoga student, I was looking for a book with illustrations that would help me understand the various poses I was asked to perform (practice) in class. "Hatha Yoga Illustrated" more than met my expectations. Each posture is demonstrated by a male or female model in a "step-by-step," start-to-finish manner. A "gentle variation"(some with props)is also shown, which is especially useful for a beginner, since some of the postures require a lot of flexibility and practice. For each pose a counter pose is listed along with the pose's physical and mental benefits. Contraindications are listed as well. The authors also include an introductory section on the "Art and Practice of Yoga" which includes ways to breathe and meditate. With this book, I can now practice at home what I'm learning in class.

    This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in yoga, but I especially recommend it for those doing the P90X program. The yoga portion of P90X frustrated me greatly. I couldn't follow it at all--until I got this book. It explains all of the positions used in Yoga X (plus more) step-by-step, complete with photographs. Once I practiced the positions from this book, I had no problem at all following the Yoga X DVD. I only wish I had purchased it sooner.

    P90X Extreme Home Fitness Workout Program - 13 DVDs, Nutrition Guide, Exercise Planner











    The book is also great for people who've gone through Richard Hittleman's 28-Day Yoga Exercise Plan and are looking to delve deeper into yoga and learn more positions. The Hittleman book gets you started and provides a foundation; this book builds on that foundation.

    This yoga book is everything I was hoping it would be. Yoga instruction books are a personal choice. Members of my family have a favorite yoga book that just does not work for me. I am a beginner, and the description of this book sounded like it would provide what I was looking for. It does not disappoint. The explanations of benefits the different poses provide are most helpful. The body positioning pictures are clear and directions for positioning concise. I highly recommend this book.

    I've been teaching Yoga for a few years now after being a student for more than twenty.This book offers a very detailed look at many of the most common yoga asanas including contraindicated physical issues for each one.I had borrowed the book from our local library a dozen times before I purchased it.I find myself reading "Hatha Yoga Illustrated" before class to remind myself of different aspects of each pose.They also give a wide variety of "gentle variations" of each pose.This book is a must have for new yoga teachers.

    I loved this book. There was a short segment in the front talking about the spiritual aspect of yoga, meditation and breathing, but the rest of the book is poses. They are divided into sections with pictures on how to get in and out of each pose. The pictures are very clear and perfectly done. At the end there are several workouts and instead of having just a list of all the poses, they include tiny pictures of them so you do not have to look back in the book if you don't remember what the poses are. This is a very good book.

    Getting too long in the tooth and now a gym rat come-lately, it took me a long time to decide to give Yoga a try. To begin, I took this book out of the library and signed up for a class. At the gym, it was a little intimidating to work out with those youngish women. But this book, with its hundreds of detailed sketches of the way into the postures, as well as the information it provides about breathing, gave me the resource I needed. Now I'm into Yoga first thing in the morning and whenever I get tense or tight. A great book for beginners and probably for those well along on the journey. Personally, I meditate and do Yoga mainly for the physical benefits, which seem exceptional.

    I am a yoga teacher, and I highly recommend this book. It explains each pose in very clear detail, with some of the best pictures & descriptions that I have ever seen in any yoga book! It is an excellent book for beginning students, as well as a great reference even for those who are more advanced. An essential book to have in your yoga library.

    I am new to yoga and really enjoying the classes. My instructors are great at explaining the poses but this book also helped me with detailed pictures of the poses and explainations of the breathing used through the poses. One feature I also like is that each poses includes gentle versions and a list of contraindications. I have spinal and joint issues that make this important.

    While I think that a class is the best way to begin your yoga journey this book is also a great help. Allowing you to review poses you learned in a session and expand your knowledge of this wonderful practice.
