Tight Hip, Twisted Core: The Key To Unresolved Pain

*From The Creator Of The Hip Hook*

The underlying cause of your pain could be a tight and unrecognized muscle in your hip.

Do you have pain in your back, tailbone, pelvis, hip, knee, or foot that won’t go away, no matter what you try? All of these issues can result from tightness in the iliacus and psoas, commonly called the “hip flexor” which can cause not just hip pain, but pain all over the body.

Most people don’t even know they have an iliacus, but this tight muscle can cause lower back pain while sitting, hip pain with driving & can even make you prone to hip osteoarthritis. The truth is that almost everyone has hip flexor tightness and this tension twists the core of the body. As a result of too much sitting, driving, running, biking, kicking, heavy lifting, yoga, dance, gymnastics, or stress, a tight hip could be the missing link to enjoying a pain-free life. Hip health is key to a pain free body.

In this book you will:

  • Discover how these muscles impact your body from head to toe
  • Determine if you are one of the millions of people with a tight iliacus or psoas muscle
  • Release the tension in these stressed tissues for good
  • Get your body aligned for pain-free performance & increased endurance lowering your risk of injuries
  • Prevent iliacus and psoas muscle tightness from developing ever again
  • Get detailed hip flexor exercises, tips to address trigger points, exercises for sciatica, tools to keep the hip flexible & solutions for pelvic pain.
  • Maintain the health of the hip joint & keep the hip stretchable.
  • Know the cause for tailbone pain & the effective techniques for iliacus and psoas releases.

Based on decades of physical therapy practice, this book outlines 3 simple steps to get your hip healthy and your core aligned, helping you resolve your pain and create hip mobility without expensive treatments, surgeries, and medications.

I am an exercise physiologist that has had an undiagnosed problem - for decades. This book is a tool to help and hopefully identify what is throwing my entire body off. I have been to many highly qualified doctors and therapists and none have mentioned the “star of the show” in this book. Thanks for the education. I am also a yoga instructor - none of the postures helped because… I have a muscle(s) locked in the “on” position!

Iliopsoas, iliacus, psoas, hip... the hip I knew about.

I found Ms. month's book informative, easy to understand, and useful.

The exercises are easy to follow and apply. As an ice hockey goaltender in me early 60s, it natural to feel some aches, pain, and stiffness in the hips and lower back. Understanding how our body is built, then why the pain occurs, naturally leads to curiosity for relief, and this book delivers. Applying the simple terms and using supporting diagrams for direction, has made my life after play, much better. Using this information has also assisted me in making changes in daily activities, so I move a lot more easily.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in having more mobility and less pain in all of your physical activities.

I've been practicing massage therapy for 15 years. After my initial training I completed a 300 hour neuromuscular program at Colorado School of Healing Arts in 2015. We used the same book she cites, Travell & Simons. In the first week of the program we learned a simliar reciprocal inhibition technique to release the iliacus, balance the pelvis and correct functional leg length discrepancy. This was part of our postural assessment protocol, likely because IT IS SO IMPORTANT to consider. We did 90 minute trades practicing trigger point on the psoas & iliacus, it's the best my back has ever felt. It was baffling for me to try and practice these techniques in the current medical system as chiropractors & PTs are slow to accept that they have been missing this massive piece of information. They won't even approach the conversation, it's disheartening. So Christine's book has been like a shield for me in those situations. Most of all I am grateful to have a client ready manual to guide them through these concepts so they can continue the work at home and be prepared for those tough conversations with the less informed. Thank you!

I had terrible back pain that I successfully managed with Gokhale method, but it left me with hip pain. After a few years, and failed PT, I could barely walk 1/4 mile without my leg/hip giving out. I felt off kilter and twisted. It took months of googling to try to figure it out and I came across this book and figured it couldn’t hurt. Well, doing the self-treatment (without the special tool) resulted in amazing relief! I was standing straighter, my uneven shoulders were even and my foreword head posture receded the same day. I can walk farther now but still have a little hip pain- different now, like my hip is relearning where it should sit in that socket. I can even sleep comfortably now! And my Gokhale posture is so much better. I am thrilled. I did order the hip hook and ball (hasn’t arrived yet), but in the meantime I took a thick washcloth and folded it on top of my lacrosse ball to get the depth. Not perfect, but it’s helped. She has great videos on her blog and the exercises in the book are plentiful and powerful even without the special tool. So don’t hesitate to try it out. I did the kindle book and it is smooth and no issues with editing or anything.

As an ex-competitive athlete (gymnastics and hurdling) I arrived into middle age with a lot of muscle, joint, and spine issues. The problems with my hips have been on-going for over 15 years. I've tried PT, chiropractic, massage, and trigger point injections. I was doing a search online for help with stretching and came across this book. I ordered it, read it, and immediately ordered the Hip Hook stretching tool to go with it. Best thing I've ever done to help myself get out of a seemingly unsolvable physical problem. My pain is down by at least 80 percent after using the Hip Hoop for a few weeks. This book does a great job of explaining what can go wrong with the illiacus and psoas muscles, understanding that I think it crucial to using the tool correctly. I highly recommend both the book and the tool.

My Hip Hook is on its way to me so I decided to read this book to learn more about it and what might be causing my pain. This book is easy to read and understand and as I read the descriptions of the muscles and what they do my pain started to make sense. I’ve been battling debilitating chronic lower back pain for 2 years. I’ve done two rounds of physical therapy (stretching and weights), steroid injections in my facet joints and an RF ablation. Very little relief that lasted weeks at best. I kind of feel like I’ve exhausted anything my orthopedic doctors can do. I’m looking forward to using this method as well as the exercises. I also very much appreciate the suggestions of other therapies to try.

The Tight Hip, Twisted Core and hip hook has been life changing. I had been suffering with low back pain that radiated down my right leg into my foot for nearly 2.5 years. I had tried PT, chiropractor, back Dr, Acupuncture, braces, exercise, massages, supplements, yoga, and even exploratory surgery in my abdomen for a solution but nothing worked in helping relieve the pain. Not one to give up easily, I decided to look up psoas exercise books online and came across Christine Koth's book. This book was very different; it described all the problems I had been experiencing. I nearly cried with hope.
I cannot sing the books praises enough. The book brought attention to all of my complaints! lower back pain, Hip pain, groin tightness, leg ache and even foot pain with every step. I believe I had chronic tightness in my illiacus muscle exacerbated by chronic stress. The book and hip hook helped me to address this issue. I also started seeing a massage therapist who has been wonderful by helping me to relax, manage my stress andbuild up strength in my quads on the "good" leg and loosening up my hips with home exercises.
Each day without this pain is a blessing. I hope my review will help someone like me who has tried everything! I'm so thankful that I found the Tight Hip Twisted Core book by Christine Koth! Thank you so much!!!

This book is changing my life! I have had back and leg pain for more than 8 years. I’ve been to medical doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists. I’ve had pain procedures that didn’t work. I have told everyone that I think my pelvis is “out of whack”. I even had to retire early because I couldn’t stand and walk without pain. This is the first book I have found that explains in simple terms what has been happening in my body! Thank you so much for taking the time to write it and develop the “hip hook”. I have been using it for less than a week and I am seeing such a difference in my sciatic pain. THANK YOU!!

Doing the realignment on the tightest side only is different from advice I've received in the past. And it works! I do this when I wake up in the morning, before I go to sleep, and after exercise, not to mention whenever I sense that "tight" feeling. What a game changer! The section explaining the negative outcome from over stretching made so much sense. Again, this is different from what I have seen/read before, especially with yoga. As a 57 year old active guy I have all the orthopedic issues you might expect. Mostly in my knees, or so I thought. Christines book Tight Hip brings together all the other information I've been collecting over the years. As I've found the usual Healthcare Providers utterly lacking in my journey to orthopedic renewal, I've read many books on Hips, Knees, Ankles, Shoulders. Tight Hip brings it all together. You could go to 20 Healthcare Providers and not one would offer the insight Christine offers here.

So many orthopedic issues begin in lack of motion, and how our body accommodates our poor motion habits throughout our life. Ultimately, we will have SYMMETRY problems and all that entails. I don't fault Christine for selling the hook. I have one on order, and am really looking forward to using this specific-use tool. Nonetheless, the alternative she offers is a ball, which I have found works pretty well. Specifically a MobilityWOD 4" Supernova ball.

By incorporating Christines fundamental insight regarding internal rotation of the thigh due to a tight iliacus has altered my workout for the better. The result is I have far better symmetry and balance. My gait is much more even, my twisted shoulder is resolving. I believe my knee will last much longer as well. I sit (when I do) differently and stand differently. Yup, everything. The iliacus it appears is at the center of everything we do. This book is call to action! So get going...

Incredibly well written, simple, and straight forward. After just three days of following her 3 steps I’ve achieved substantial lower back/hip pain relief. I look forward to fixing other issues I have and have ordered her tool. Yes, she obviously promotes her own “invention” but for good cause. After several years I’ve spent in the physical therapy realm, i agree there is no other tool which can tackle the muscle. Kudos to her for inventing it. It might be pricey for what it is, but still cheaper than surgery

This book uncovers the missing link to chronic core pain - a twisted core. The author shows how to rebalance the core, including realizing the importance of the iliacus, an ignored muscle that I have to admit I had never considered needed to be addressed. The fantastic illustrations help visualize the problem and make it much clearer how to resolve the issue.

She had me at "Iliacus rhymes with 'Silly Yak Kiss'"! Christine Koth takes complicated information and makes it simple to understand. And as a writer of musical theater for kids, I loved how she "set the stage" for the hip-flexor players, bringing the illicus muscle front and center. This book has changed my life, after 9 months with a hip flexor injury. Finally, have the tools and information I need!

Very easy to read book. Had a foot then gait walking issue- never had pain before then hip was off- so I thought. Limoed. Massage deep tissue and cupping helped. Physical therapy was all concentrated on my tight hip flexor- left side. Acupuncture was good for my soul however still I was limping. Very active person I started to avoid walking alone so no one would notice. At night left side hurt. I also sit a lot with computer work. I was in good shape yet felt bad and looked funny walking. MAT -muscle activation techinque helps- I was tired of all the appointments an d money spent. This week I fell upon Feldenkrais - huge help exercise and Somatics to gently awaken used parts of my body. The inner part of my thigh still intense with pain and I was looking at my core. So much at once. At home I am able incorporate all I have learned and this book is by far The BEST! I have learned so much and I will continue to learn as I know releasing trigger points is a huge key I was missing. This little over looked area makes a huge difference. The author is brilliant and familiar with all techniques out there. I can now look forward to healing and exercises to do for life and share with others. Psoas is more than we realize and iliacus muscle hidden needs attention. This is something everyone should look at that has experienced hip area pain. We are not being educated enough and I am glad to have found this book when I really was scared that healing was not coming and everyone suggesting things that weren't working and not looking at the complete picture. I also recommend paying attention now to the complete body and incorporating moments from this author that will help long term.

Being in menopause, I figured I just had a lot of hormones raging and that back, stomach, buttock, leg, and pelvic pain were just par for the course. I had also concluded that menopause hormones, plus having 3 kids was why I had pelvic floor prolapse. I had resigned myself to the fact that I would be forever paying physical therapists and massage therapists to relieve issues that kept coming back. I was so wrong. This book gave me the guidance to release the muscles that were creating the pain and discomfort that was progressively getting worse. After just one 15 minute self-treatment (I used a 4" ball, because the hip hook wasn’t available for purchase at the time) almost all of the pain was gone. I also think it relaxed the pelvic floor enough to feel a “lift” and relieve the low feeling. The book has clear information on how to keep muscles healthy. I will continue on this healing path, and I thank the author for putting this out there.

This is so simply written. Normally I would become bored with this kind of info but wanting to get rid of the pain in my lower back kept me motivated all the way thru — reading the book in just one sitting. I go to a great chiropractor and she’s helped keep my spine in alignment but the pain in my lower back - on my right side - still persisted. Learning why my back has gotten so bad has been very important. I live in a house with many steps and have spent too much time sitting. These exercises and lifestyle changes are easy to make. i can actually do this!
hope the whole world soon learns about your work. It’s very much needed today. Not just to relieve pain but to prevent it.
From the time we go to school and throughout our life we sit too much. So much pain could be avoided if everyone practiced what your are teaching early in life.
With my very first session - after following your exercises - I got relief. I have a Joovv infrared light and a biomat but now know how to get better use from them. I’m about to start doing yoga and Pilates again and now know how to do them correctly.
    Thanks very much Christine.

Many years ago, a therapist released my iliacus. It was probably one of the most memorable moments I've ever had. It was super tight and I squirmed as he dug his fingers into there. But within a week of that release, my 400m time dropped from a struggling 2 min to 1:30. What a difference a more relaxed hip makes in running! It was then I truly experienced what a tight iliacus (among other hip flexors) could do for athletic performance.

Fast forward a few years, and I had studied a number of rehab disciplines. Some had knowledge of the iliacus, many did not and simply grouped them under the big category of hip flexor. But also I learned a number of things about muscles and treating movement. It is wonderful that many of these concepts that took me years and many courses to learn are all summarized in this book.

Also, many current techniques and concepts are highlighted, which are unfortunately not covered in many other texts. They tend towards older techniques and concepts. Things like prolonged pressure, which is something I learned recently at a workshop, and lighter pressure than you would think. So not only do you get a lot of information about the iliacus, you will also get a lot about current thinking on techniques to treat muscles in general.

Nicely covered is a deep dive into the iliacus and its function and what happens when dysfunction occurs and other structures are affected. There is a great section on how the iliacus is involved with other conditions like hip arthritis. Many diagrams are provided which, through simple illustration, show the iliacus's action on the various structures of the body, and what happens to you when you have a tight iliacus.

As a bonus, the book also covers some other areas, like organs and blood vessel effects, nerve effects, as well as emotions and their role in muscle tightness.

I highly recommend this gem - you'll get all you'll want to know about the iliacus and a lot of other great material as well.

I disagree with the review that said you need the special tool, and that this is just an ad. I don't have the tool and i used the info in the book to totally get rid of my pain.

I've had ongoing lumbar, hip and shoulder pain for a few years and i'm only 40 so I was worried to see it progress. PT, massage, chiro and pain relievers helped in the short term but I knew I wasn't finding the cause. Finally a personal trainer led me to a myofacial release therapist. She inspected my posture at every visit and helped me troubleshoot my posture during sleep, standing and sitting and lent me a book about my psoas. I found *this* book on my own, and started to do the routine in the book. My posture was originally exactly like one of the bad posture pictures in this book. This explains everything about why my pain kept returning and the book gave me step by step ways to keep it from happening again. If you're dealing with pain, this is a small cost compared to repeated office visits or surgery. I love the tips about how to sit better, and exercises to avoid.

This new book gives refreshing and enlightening lessons on the pain many of us experience from sitting too much every day and not being active enough--or even for those of us who overuse our bodies in physical endeavors like dance, yoga, and running. As a long time yoga practitioner and teacher, a health coach, and a former marathon runner, I wish that I had this resource years ago. It is straightforward, easy to read, and offers helpful solutions, because as Koth says, "stretching isn't enough". After years of pain after wearing high heals, and a constant "clunk" in my hip, I have starting using the methods in this book and seen immediate results. This book is a great resource for yoga teachers, trainers, as well as individuals with pain in the hips, knees, shoulders, and back from inattention to the iliacus and psoas muscles. Highly recommend!

I read the ebook in 2 days! I never read anything in 2 days. After having chronic hip pain for over 20 years, I finally succumbed to a Total Hip Replacement (THR) on the right side a few years ago. This was after hundreds of massages, PT, pain meds, stretching, not stretching, yoga, gym, no yoga no gym. You get the point. Now, I'm not going to lie, the surgery did help me get my life back. But, 3 years later, I still have shoulder pain, knee pain, and foot weirdness. A PT did use the word "twisted" when describing my ribs a year ago. Go figure! I am a Bodyworker with an absolute obsession of Anatomy. I taught Kinesiology at a local massage school for over 15 years. I know a few things. Christine is 100% spot on in the fact that most providers in this field, undertreat, ignores, barely touches or even notices the iliacus . My eyes were glued to the pages as she skillfully EXPLAINS everything about this muscle. Yes, I am a geek but I think its a well thought out approach to having folks understand their own bodies. Well done, Christine! I can not wait to sink my hip into one of those hooks!! And yes, I tried everything she mentions. Balls, rollers, wooden spoons, door knobs. I highly recommend reading this book. I believe it will change the lives of many.

I can’t recommend this book enough. I’m a runner dealing with IT band issues that have been frustrating me for some time. I’ve been doing all that I know and have been told to do with no results. This book is very easy to read, fast paced, and yet full of information, diagrams, easy at home exercises and recommendations. Even for people who feel like they don't have any issues with pain or tightness in their core, just knowing how to help realign the pelvis, stretch properly, and knowing when it might be time to go see the doctor are important information to have at their fingertips. I can see how it would be very nice to have this book in paper form so as to bookmark pages with diagrams for trigger points or exercises, and also because my kindle is old and only has black and white. I am really curious now to try the hip hook she invented. In this digital age of the internet and information, I really appreciate having information that I can trust; that is cited and I know is valid.

I'm sure this muscle needs to be released. I can't wait to read more of this book. Thanks, Christine for doing a wonderful job making what could be a very boring topic super interesting.

Compelling medical book about the snarky iliacus muscle told in a creative and story-telling fashion. Easy to read and creative storytelling kept me engaged in the book! I would highly recommend this book for those who have any kind of neck, back, hip, leg or foot pain. The book intricately explains where this muscle is, what it does, and if tight how it can twist your core and effect many other parts of the body. After reading the book a “lay person” can self diagnose and get to the root of their problem, in which most traditional medical doctors overlook. A must read!
