Yoga for Trauma Recovery: Theory, Philosophy, and Practice

Yoga for Trauma Recovery outlines best practices for the growing body of professionals trained in both yoga and psychotherapy and addresses the theoretical foundations that tie the two fields. Chapters show how understanding the safe and effective integration of trauma-informed yoga and somatic psychotherapy is essential to providing informed, effective treatment.

Uniting recent developments in our understanding of neuroscience and trauma recovery with ancient tenets of yoga philosophy and practice, this foundational text is a must-listen for those interested in the healing capacities of each modality. Listeners will come away from the book with a strong sense of how to apply theory, philosophy, and research to the real-life complexities of clients and students.

I found this book extremely helpful, particularly in understanding the impact of trauma on the central nervous system, and how yoga can be a therapeutic resource during recovery. I am a yogi and a trauma survivor. I am not a clinician. I found the language easy to understand. The examples, and practices, provide the necessary tools to create trauma-informed yoga practices. I found this book instrumental in aligning my yoga teaching to better serve my students.

As stated in my forward, books such as Lisa’s, provide us with a view of full spectrum trauma responses. Consideration for how we all are similar yet different in all of our healing practices is a voice that needs to be heard. This is a great book.

This incredible resource integrates Lisa's deep knowledge of both yoga and trauma recovery in an easy to understand way. By weaving in stories of real life examples, you can then make connections in applying this knowledge by reflecting on your own experiences. This book is a must for yoga teachers, and counselors, and anyone who is looking to build resilience within themselves and those they serve. This book will remain in an easy to reach place on my shelf for reference! Thank you, Lisa!

Lots of great info here! Lisa shares her personal experiences using yoga with clients and teaching yoga in prisons, schools – even in Haiti after the earthquake. The material is easy to digest, even the science-y parts, and I finished the book feeling inspired to act, heal myself, and share with others!
UPDATE: Another review said they paid $130 for the book?? I think I paid 36? Not sure what's going on there.
