Pilates for Runners: Everything you need to start using Pilates to improve your running – get stronger, more flexible, avoid injury and improve your performance

An easy-to-use resource to improve your running with Pilates.

Pilates for Runners is a valuable resource filled with mat Pilates exercises designed for runners of all abilities. The clear and accessible exercises will help you as a runner develop core strength, flexibility, improved balance, coordination and good posture. All of these are important elements for a life of injury-free running and optimal performance. Alongside the exercises find expert advice and motivational interviews with real runners who testify to the transformative power of Pilates.

Many people who run are highly competitive and hungry for any edge over others. That’s where this book comes in–it offers them a way of remaining injury free and becoming stronger than their opponents. Not everyone wants to attend a class or can make the time to get to one. This runner-friendly book will save you time and money on injury specialists–an immediately accessible reference for time-poor runners.

The Pilates exercises feature photographs of real runners of all ages with accompanying, simply written instructions and adaptations. Another feature will be the motivational interviews with real runners who have benefited from practicing Pilates.

I have always done Pilates for my back but this book was great in that it specialised in exercises for running. I have been doing the couch to 5k so found this very helpful. It is well laid out, is easy to follow with the use of pictures and gives suggested guide plans to follow.

This is a lovely Pilates book. It's really clear, the bits of context are very engaging, and it's all very nicely written. I have a couple of other Pilates books, but this is really a cut above the usual offering, much more individual and accessible (and it's not just for those who run, actually, anyone who takes Pilates mat classes or is thinking of it, or who wants to do some work at home will learn and find inspiration).

Recently bought this book, very impressed. Great exercises with photos, & v. clear instructions. Rich with content and inspiration. Each exercise has lots of photos, up to 5 or 6, , showing the progression of the movements - and step by step instruction along the side. I like things easy & clear and this book does it for me. Also like the real life case studies of runners using Pilates exercises to improve their performance. I recently I started running and getting a few minor aches & pains - am using this book to help me understand what to do about it, and it's really helping. There is a whole section on injuries, again v. clear - with great diagrams, headings such as : Cause, Treatment, Prevention. Et Voila !
It's a lovely book, with lots of general tips and inspiration for anyone who loves to exercise and keep fit & strong.

If you are a runner you need this book!
Pilates for Runners contains easy to follow poses, clear concise instructions and interesting facts. I didn't know how important core strength is to prevent injury and develop stamina. Reading this has made me understand the reason for my persistent back-ache and I can already feel improvement from doing the exercises.
Love this book and use it every day!

Bought this book and took my time to read it through - I'm an old school runner and never done Pilates or yoga. I found the book easy to read and understand so started to work through the beginners routines doing it 2-3 times a week. Really enjoying it and getting to grips with the exercises. I didn't think they did a lot at first but now starting to get into them and already seeing improvements and my fitness is improving and running feeling stronger and faster. Which after a period of injury at 61 I didn't expect. A great book and I'll continue to keep on with the exercises and hope to set new age group best times on the back of it! Thanks Harri excellent book!

Fantastic book which every runner and cyclist should both read and practice. It contains a comprehensive program of exercises but is organised so you can dip in and pick areas that you probably feel are most important to you. As a runner and cyclist who has a tendency to overdo it I have, in the short time since purchasing, already found this an important aid in my weekly training schedule. As a personal trainer it is an invaluable reference to work core strength areas with clients.

Highly recommended reference and work book for anybody who exercises

I have found this book so interesting and informative. As a beginner runner I wondered if it would be relevant for me, but it is suitable for anyone, regardless of ability. It is very clear and concise, with easy to find exercises and examples, as well as some really inspirational stories. I have already started noticing the difference in my running, just by being more aware of my posture and core. Plus the stretching has helped with my flexibility and muscle recovery after runs. Would definitely recommend it.

I love this book! So helpful, easy to read and understand. It gives a clear and precise delivery of relevant information for each individual area that the reader may want to pick out and a great introduction to the positive power of Pilates. I like how this book gives comprehensive support to men and women of all abilities, needs and time available to dedicate to looking after ourselves from reading the book to getting out and running. Thank you to the author for a great resource and I look forward to hopefully reading more from her in the future.

I have only had this publication for a week but already I know it is going to transform my running as well as my life! I usually struggle with exercise books because the explanations are too complicated - or not sufficiently detailed - and the reading experience is ultimately dry and uninspiring. Not so with this gem! The instructions are beautifully simple and precise, clearly set out on the page with easy to follow instruction, and photographs showing exactly the position to be adopted. The exercises are interwoven with interesting case studies, notes, quotations from Joseph Pilates - this all enriches the reading experience. How refreshing to read a book about Pilates which is written for women and for men! But what I appreciate most of all about this wonderful book is the detail given about performing particular Pilates exercises correctly and the explanation of how each exercise will assist running performance. It's packed full of information and good advice. I hope Harri Angell will write more books - she sets the standard for other sports/fitness authors to aspire to. Bravo!

Absolutely love this book. I haven't put it down since receiving it. As a regular runner and keep fit fanatic I fall into the "Pilates and stretching is boring" camp. Within 24 hours of reading this, my mindset has changed. It has helped me understand not only the benefits of Pilates but why my body reacts and feels the way it does. It provides clear instructions on what I need to do to address the niggles and prevent injury whilst improving my times.

    Well written with great illustrations.

Bottom line...if you run....BUY this book.

A clear and concise manual. It's easy to find the exercises you need to work on the parts of your body you want to strengthen and stretch.

You can also search for the exercise to help an existing injury, this is really useful as most runners I know discover Pilates because they've broken or strained some vital bit of their body, and want to mend it asap. If your ITB is being a pain then you need page 167, for Piriformis problems you need page 165. You don't have to trawl through endless chapters and chatter to find what you want.

Each exercise is well explained and shown, with modifications to ensure you get maximum benefit and don't make any existing problem worse. I need pictures, just words are not enough when you're trying to imagine the position your body is supposed be in.
