The Rise Of The Ultra Runners

Once the reserve of only the most hardcore enthusiasts, ultra running is now a thriving global industry, with hundreds of thousands of competitors each year. But is the rise of this most brutal and challenging sport – with races that extend into hundreds of miles, often in extreme environments – an antidote to modern life, or is it a symptom of a modern illness?

In The Rise of the Ultra Runners, award-winning author Adharanand Finn travels to the heart of the sport to investigate the reasons behind its rise and discover what it takes to join the ranks of these ultra athletes. Through encounters with the extreme and colorful characters of the ultramarathon world, and his own experiences of running ultras everywhere from the deserts of Oman to the Rocky Mountains, Finn offers a fascinating account of people testing the boundaries of human endeavor.

A must for any serious( or not-take-yourself-too-seriously!) runner. This is a great help in understanding and treating all those niggling minor injuries that don’t quite need a trip to the physio. Each time I start getting a persistent pain spot I can usually find an explanation and advice on how to correct it from this book. Highly recommended!
Great even for students of anatomy too…

This book and other Science Of books are great for your personal education or as a tool for practitioners. It explains complex concepts in easy to understand terms. To me, the illustrations are the best part. They accurately depict the human body while simplifying and highlighting what you need to know. As a D1 track and field athletic trainer, I use these books as visualization tools to help me explain certain concepts to my athletes.

I really enjoyed this book. Books on running can be tedious but I found this well balanced, from great descriptions of the runs, ideas for approaching distance running, stories of amazing feats and even to recovery tips. It has motivated me a lot for my upcoming marathon and helped shape how I am going to approach it. Trying to stop myself thinking about attempting an ultra until it’s done!

I have been wanting to get into running but I’ve always been plagued with injuries. I’m in my early 30s and I’ve had knee issues since my mid 20s. This book helped me overcome nagging injuries and hitting 14 mile runs on the weekend is no problem now. This book helped me run my first half marathon with a time of 2:04 in September 2021. Half a year later I ran a 1:47.

This book is all you need to get started with running a 5k, 10k, half a marathon, and a full marathon. The training plans are split into beginner and advanced, I would recommend doing beginner at least twice before attempting advanced. I’ve only focused on half marathons but I’ve noticed it’s helped my shorter runs significantly. Following this book will make you a better runner. Happy running!

I absolutely loved this book. Certainly up there with his first two books and perhaps even better.

An absolute must read for any runner getting older and looking for inspiration. Adharanand offers a real insight into the world of Ultra running covering lots of topics like nutrition, shoes, injuries etc. Rather than trying to sell you his opinion he gives an objective view based on his discussions with experienced people.

Rather than just admire those that he interviews, he actually becomes an ultra runner and lives the experience about which he writes. His recollections of the races he runs supported by his family are inspiring and quite touching at times.

A well written, gripping read, I highly recommend it.

If you run or want to run, this book is a must have. Gives great advice and guides but also explains the reason the advice and guidance is going to work. You’ll come away with a greater understanding of how the human body works and how running relates to it. You learn a lot initially but it remains a great resource to come back to and reference. I’m not an ultra-runner, I’m not even a runner, but I couldn’t put this book down. The stories from the ultra-running community teach you that we are all stronger than we think, if we can overcome the doubts in our mind. Although I don’t run, I do cycle and after reading this book, I am left with the desire to attempt some endurance riding.

I would say that there’s not lots of practical advice for ‘how’ to run ultras. But there’s definitely some helpful advice as the author develops his running form and deals with injuries. However, practical tips aside, the mental inspiration you’ll get from this book is well worth the read if you’re looking to run an ultra or even a marathon.

Great weekend/holiday book. Would definitely recommend.

I liked the book a lot, for many reasons. The book itself is well written and the illustrations were usually great both aesthetically and instructionally. I've been a runner for years, but bad coaching and thus bad habits led me to extensive injury. This book was instrumental in correcting many form deficiencies, and I like the provided training plans. Basically, my experience suggests that once you begin running half and full marathons, you need to be smart about how you do it if you want to avoid injury and strain; this book can help you train smart.

I got this since my husband had recently began jogging in an effort to keep fit during COVID.

This book is really informative, and I like how everything is science-based. There are so many illustrations/diagrams to help with understanding and probably the most distinctive feature is how comprehensive it is. It talks about everything from gait, drills, tips to prevent injury, recovery stretches and human anatomy.

I listened to this book while putting in my own road miles, and it was delightful. Finn is a great storyteller. What he has down here, combining the tale of his own journey in ultra running with those of others as well as the story of the sport itself, is no easy task. But he totally pulled it off. It was entertaining, informative, and inspiring. A very compelling read/listen that has me looking for my first ultra opportunities (if this damn virus would ever subside).

I finished this book in 3 days. I find Mr. Finn's style of writing quite pleasing. He elegantly navigates between the history of ultra running (the title is NOT misleading by any means), interviews with top athletes in the sport, and his own personal journey as he trains for the UTMB (no small feat in and of itself!). His emphasis on understanding the mental challenges of running extreme distances is intriguing and multi-faceted. You have his own personal accounts of what he endures out on the trail, as well as insights from legends ranging from Zach Miller and Killian Jornet to Elisabet Barnes and Hillary Allen. He asks all the right questions, and delves into deeper topics along the way. Why do ultra runners take these risks? How do they carry on in the midst of extreme physical pain and mental turmoil? Is suffering integral to living a happy and fulfilling life? Do we endure the pain of running extreme distances (or any other difficult physical or mental activity) to better appreciate the comforts of our ordinary lives? (Some examples, among many others!). Well done, Mr. Finn.

I bought this book, one because I'm an anatomy junky and two, to better understand the anatomy of running, specifically. This book does that and more. The author goes into not just the anatomy of running and muscle actions but also the anatomy of different stretches for runners. Stretches for the glutes, thighs, calves and even the feet. There are stretching and running schedules in the book as well. Overall, I am impressed with this book.

This came up in my suggested reading list and I bought it on a whim, then devoured it in a day. A truly honest account of the highs and extreme lows of the sport. As someone who has felt that low and the instant regret of a DNF, this book is a stark reminder of the power of the human mind in pushing us through or holding us back. Honest, at times gritty, and thoroughly enjoyable read. Will be downloading his other books to keep me busy for another day in lockdown

Adharanand Finn, an accomplished road runner with a 2:50 marathon PR and author of Running with the Kenyans, decided to see for himself exactly what the ultramarathon phenomenon was all about. For his first race, he signed up for the Oman Desert Marathon, a 156 km race that takes place over 6 days in the Saharan Desert. He was completely unprepared for the experience, but ~spoiler alert~ he finishes. And so goes the start of his adventure in ultrarunning.

Finn ran that sandy ultra but instead of scarring him for life, it spurred him on to run more ultras, all in the name of journalism. He decided he may as well try qualifying for UTMB. Not only did he run in the desert, but he also ran in the mountains. He ran a 24 hour ultra on a track. He ran a 100 mile races in California and France. His recap of Comrades in South Africa was hilarious. In several of his races, there were blisters and hallucinations. At one race, he got lost. By the time he finished his quest and ran UTMB, he learned a lot of lessons and found the inner strength he didn't know he possessed.

Finn also wanted to learn more about the sport and the runners who participate. If you follow ultra running at all, you'll recognize a lot of names: Kilian Jornet, Jim Walmsley, Zack Miller, Hillary Allen, and Clare Gallagher, among others. Throughout his journey, he shares a great deal of wisdom and information about ultrarunning. Finn is a gifted writer and while reading the book, I found myself on the trail with him, mentally, at least!

Along his journey, Finn learns a lot about the sport. So did I. The Rise of the UltraRunners is such well-written book that at times I had difficulty putting it down. You don't have to be an ultra marathoner to enjoy it. I'm not and I absolutely loved this book. Since I'm not planning on running any ultras, I'll just live vicariously through Finn.

I shared this with my sister who is just getting into marathons at the moment.

The thing is I learned loads about technique and we ended up critiquing eachother- I think this approach is more effective than trying to use this yourself. I like how they really break down each individual part of a step to help you understand.

This is a book for people who are serious about running. The book covers typical subjects such as how to train and how to prevent injuries but it does it from more of a scientific point of view. This is a typical DK book in that it is absolutely full of illustrations and diagrams. They are mostly focused on the anatomy of the body. This is quite an indepth book and probably not aimed at people who only want to jog around the block. If you want to really understand what is happening to your body when you run so that you can prevent injury and come up with the most effective training programmes this book is for you. It is well written and perfect to keep as a reference book.

This is an excellent reference book that I intend to keep available to dip in and out of. There is so much information available to analyse what you are doing right or wrong and suggestions how to deal with running issues you may encounter.
I have always admired DK books and we have had many of them over the years, many of which we still have.
I know a lot of this information is available via the internet these days but with a reference book I find it an advantage to study it and have readily available. This is a quality publication that covers all aspects of running complete with diagrams, charts and easily understandable explanation. In a lot of cases product write ups make the item look better than they are, in this case I believe it is not until you start thumbing through the book that you realise how good this book actually is.

He moves through the history, top figures and actual experience of ultra-running with great ease. You get just enough background on a person or key race and then just as smoothly, he moves to another top runner and another ultra race. I found this book very informative and inspirational. He manages to capture the dwellings in the “pain cave” well, without belabouring the issue and losing pace in the storytelling. I found this infinitely more enjoyable than his previous book, The Way of The Runner.

My question with reference books like this is often 'why wouldn't I just google this stuff?'. In order for the book to have value, it needs to give me more than what a quick search online would. In my opinion, this book is worth buying if you want to get a pretty comprehensive primer on the anatomical, biological, and physical aspects of running.

The diagrams are clear, attractive, and easy to read. Thoughtful graphic design means the layouts make sense, with a clear visual hierarchy on each page. The anatomical illustrations are highly detailed and some of the cross sections even made me a little squeamish because I usually try not to think about the poor mechanical of some our joints...those ligaments look a little too fragile for my liking.

The book itself is a well-made object - the flex cover feels good and the paper is high quality.

The content is superb - as a keen runner I felt I knew quite a bit just via osmosis and scattered google searches, but I found there was something to learn in most sections of this book. It's possible that its information will be out of date as running science moves on in the next decade, but I think I can be confident that much of the information in the Science of Running is well-researched enough to stand the test of time.

He explains so brilliantly his experience of being taken to the edge, thinking, or even knowing you've got no more and somehow carrying on. I think its relate-able for anyone who runs, not just ultra runners, you can feel like that in any race. He also gets to meet and talk to some of the world's best ultra runners and it's interesting hearing their take on long distances too - how they do it, why they do it etc. Great book!

I found this book mesmerizing. I have set my sights on doing an ultra in 2020 and this was so inspirational! I loved the audio book but will admit the kind of "screaming" of all the quotes from others was a bit off putting until I got used to it. I listened on 1.5X speed and it mitigated the issue and sped the book along. This was with me for several long runs (11ish miles or so) and I literally added a couple of miles because I wanted to finish the book. Rare!

This does give you a great idea of ultra running including the why and the what - not specifically the how (esp. if you follow this dude who seems perpetually unprepared for it in spite of being a writer and knowing how to do research). The different trail races were interesting - esp. as they go far and wide all over the world. Not a ton of USA based races in here but the focus on the sport as a whole and where it is worldwide was super interesting. Not a back of the pack book. I will likely have another listen around Christmas to inspire me to hit the training hard starting January.

When Finn writes a book, he really throws himself into it. In Running with the Kenyans, he moved his entire family to Kenya so that he could do just that. He did the same with Japan for The Way of the Runner. Both were engaging and fascinating insights into their respective running cultures, and he does the same again for the ultra-running scene (only without the trans-continental relocation).
Finn makes the journey from ultra-sceptic to fully-fledged ultra runner, meeting many ultra luminaries and tackling races from a multi-stage desert race to the UTMB, getting right to the heart of why people push themselves to such extremes. It is utterly compelling and very well written. I gobbled it up in only a few sittings.
If you've only ever vaguely considered ultra-running, this book may just make a convert of you too.

For some reason, I thought this book was about the increase in popularity of Ultra running in the last few decades. It isn't. Perhaps obviously, it's about the rise of the author, Ad Finn, into becoming an ultra runner himself. Being familiar with the races and most of the characters the author mentions, I found the book very enjoyable. It is well written and often funny. Additionally, having run numerous ultras, including some of those ran by Ad, I could really relate to the writing - it took me back emotionally to the experiences. Another great book by Ad Finn.

Finn's entry to ultra running comes via an assignment to cover and run in an ultra in Oman. Between this and his racing the sport's de-facto championship, the UTMB, he traveled to running communities in the US, South Africa and beyond. I actually enjoyed this quite a bit more than I did his book on Japan as I felt it to be more readable and engrossing. I also enjoyed the diversity of runners he spoke with, both ultra "legends" (Sage Canaday, Killian Journet, Joss Naylor) and relatively unknown. Unlike some of his other books I read this soon after publication so the events he covered were fairly fresh.

No desire to run this distance, through the desert, or on muddy, scree-covered climbs but I really enjoyed his descriptions. I also liked how he juxtaposed road ultras like Comrades with the trail runs in the Pyrenees. I also enjoyed the fuller descriptions of fell running which I read about in another book but didn't fully understand.

A solid and quick-paced read. Amazing to think he sometimes ran 50 or 100 miles in less time than it took me to read this book.

This book is inspirational and unputdownable.
It is not just for Ultra Runners, or even Runners – it is for everyone who struggles with the challenges which face us all, in one way or another, on the journey through life.
Finn writes engagingly in a style that makes you want to turn rapidly to the next page to find out what happens during each challenge when the going gets so tough that your inner voice screams at you that its ok to give up.
At these lowest points he discovers in himself the hidden inner strength to continue to the finish.
Early on, he includes the quote from an unknown author which he saw tattooed on the leg of a Spanish ultra athlete.
The Devil whispered in my ear, “You’re not strong enough to withstand the storm.”
I whispered back: “I am the storm.”
Perhaps this is something we can all relate to.

Finn's journey is captured well. The tone of the book is very palpable. Ultra running, the drive people have to do it fascinates me. This book helps to unveil the myriad of reasons why people are drawn to such an extreme endurance sport.

It had me googling running events in my local area. :-)

If like me you are inspired by ultra runners and like me you are considering an ultra race then read this book. Not only will you enjoy Finn's journey over the two years of ultra races but you will learn from his experiences about the ultra community, iconic races, training and preparation for ultra events. However, this is all secondary to how the author describes the mental battles he has with himself and what these experiences teach him. A great read and I for one will draw upon his experiences when I tackle my first 50k race in 6 weeks time.

Having read the Adharanand Finn's other books, I was really looking forward to this one and it did not disappoint - it is very readable and inspirational (and as a keen runner, right in my sweet spot). This book introduces you to the human behind some of the personalities in ultra running (Insta or otherwise) whilst threading the author's own incredible journey into the extreme world of ultras. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys spending time experiencing nature - both on and off the beaten track.

As a keen runner I thoroughly enjoyed Adharanand's previous two books but their focus was quite removed from my own area of enjoyment. As a convert to ultra marathons this book seemed as if it was tailor written for me though. The depths to which he threw himself into the ultra scene is truly impressive and he makes a brilliant and entertaining job of explaining the reasons why so many are now challenging themselves in events that a lot of people regard as madness - almost making them come across as a perfectly normal way to spend a weekend. If you have an interest in running I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you don't I would advise reading it anyway to see what all the fuss is about. You just might be converted and find yourself halfway up a mountain in the middle of the night hallucinating too!

It might still be a little while before I take the plunge and sign up for an ultra, but I found myself wanting the lace up my sneakers and head out for a good, brutal, pace-pushing long run throughout the read. I'll definitely be returning to this book for a re-read of certain passages whenever I need pre-race inspiration, or simply a reminder of why I love running even though I'm bogged down with work, other stresses, or just exhaustion from being a parent to two very young kids. A great fit for yourself or another runner (or endurance sports or adventure enthusiast) in your life!
