The poor ratings from the acupuncture community is unfortunate and certainly biased. Dry needling is not acupuncture, although inadvertently their paths (meridians) may cross. the book itself is evidence based and knowing Dummerholt's MO one would expect nothing less. This book is a must for my classes in dry needling (ON-Point Dry Needling0

Excellent, evidence-based text book on what trigger points are, how they form, contributing medical factors, and treatment with focus on dry needling. Good comparison on western vs eastern approaches to trigger points and how dry needling is independent of acupuncture theories and provedures. Ignore the bad reviews from those who have likely not ultras the book and instead are attempting to black list this book due to competitive monetary motives.

This is such a fantastic text that is 100% evidence based so I was surprised to see this text have low reviews... then I read all the 1 star reviews and realized it wasn't that they were reviewing the book as much as a childish attempt from the acupuncture community to abolish this work. If you are a true medical professional and you want the rest of your brothers and sisters here on Earth to be healthy and well, you don't berate other medical professionals who are helping people just because you view them as monetary competitors. Shame.

I utilized this book in order to copmlete my inservice report on dry needling and myofascial trigger points and found it to be very thorough on both topics. Vast majority of the negative reviews are written by acupuncurists and judging by the similar grammar mistakes - the same person. Great buy, well worth your money and time.

This text offers the reader an opportunity to become more educated in the theories of myofascial pain and more specifically, myofascial trigger points (MTrP). Chapters are dedicated to explaining the molecular theory of myofascial pain, a brief review of MTrP history and their etiologies and perpetrating factors. Objective evidence using the scientific approach is offered for the reliability of MTrP palpation and treatment using both non-invasive and dry needling techniques. The author does utilize the case report method in a chapter and has another chapter dedicated to unresolved issues and possible future directions. All chapters have numerous references consisting of reputable peer-reviewed journal articles and texts. If you are or plan to be treating MTrP, this text is an absolute requirement to have!

I was so excited about this book that I purchased it before it was published. I was not disappointed. If you are interested in the science and treatment of pain this book is a must read. My father, Clair Davies, wrote the popular trigger point self-help book The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Currently I am working on a third edition due out in the spring of 2013. I have found Dommerholt and Huijbregts text to be profoundly helpful in my understanding of the expanded integrated trigger point hypothesis and current evidence informed treatment of trigger points. Could I have taken the time to collect all of the selected articles in this text, sure I guess, but I would have missed neurologist Dr. Robert Gerwins' summary as the last chapter. He continues to ask the hard questions and remind the research community of the gaps in our knowledge of trigger points. Why do I care what Dr. Gerwin thinks? I want to know because he has been a lead researcher in this field for many decades, he studied with Janet Travell and contributed to the primary text on trigger points, "Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual".

Anyone who tells you trigger points aren't real has not read ALL of the current science, had competent trigger point therapy or recovered from chronic myofascial pain syndrome. There is much yet to learn about muscle pain. No one discipline has all of the answers. So let's give up the turf wars and figure out how to learn from each other so we can help our fellow human beings.

First, there is a Facebook group called the Coalition for Safe Acupuncture Practice, that has mounted a smear campaign for this book and probably anything Jan Dommerholt has written or said. Their point of view is that dry needling is solely within the scope of acupuncturists. This review is not about this argument but I wanted others to know that the negative reviews on this book are probably coming from this Facebook group.

There really isn't much to say about this book except Dommerholt and Huijbregts have collaborated to help us all evolve our knowledge of all things trigger points. Over the last 10-15 years there has been quite of bit of updating of this info and this book will help anyone stay current. Personally, it renewed my passion for trigger point work and has keyed me into myofascial trigger points being a big part of my physical medicine work.

This comprehensive book is perfect for both new and seasoned practitioners. The writing style is easy to read and extremely informative. I have gained further insight into myofascial pain and trigger points. The authors have included recent research and scientific advances as well as a complete explanation of the diagnosis and treatment of myofascial trigger points. Although not an instruction manual, Dommerholt and Huijbregts' text will help you to treat your patients more successfully and comprehensively. There is discussion about treating the perpetuating factors that can prevent full or lasting relief from pain. I highly recommend this book to any pain practitioner.
