I just recently purchased this book and am only a few pages in. I'm already impressed with what I've read so far and if I can, will expound upon this review when I get through the whole book. I'm optomistic at this point as I've been dealing with chronic pain for many years and haven't found any relief as of yet through medical means.

I am a primary care physician and have purchased at least 20 copies of this book to give to patients looking for a new perspective on how to live with chronic pain. So many people who have chronic pain want to improve their quality of life without having to rely on repeated procedures (injections, surgeries) or chronic narcotic pain medications. Dr Parks provides a mind-body approach that empowers patients to take charge of their lives by learning how to engage in valued activities despite having chronic pain.

I was so fortunate to have Dr. Parks as my pain psychologist when I was in the 10 week Mary FreeBed Pain Rehabilitation Program in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is an excellent psychologist and taught me so much about the brain, central nervous system, and pain. This man cares deeply for the people he serves. He has a way of explaining things for those of us who don't have any degrees in medicine, psychology, or neurology that makes it easy to understand what the heck is going on in our bodies and why we hurt so much when images and testing say we shouldn't hurt anymore. I so appreciated my one-on-one time with him while I was in the program, and I love his book as well. The book is a great reminder of the things I learned in person from him, and it helps me stay on track and not get discouraged when I'm having a flare. If you suffer from chronic pain, this book will not take away your pain, but it will certainly help you get on with your life and help you understand that you CAN live with pain and minimize it so you can enjoy your life again! Dr. Parks is the best!!

I’ve struggled with Chronic pain for many years. Though I still battle it, this book has given me tools to work through it. Understanding how pain works— how the brain processes and holds onto pain is nothing short of amazing. This book coupled with the Pain Rehab podcast has been helpful in helping me work through this process. It is a book that I think I will review often.

The power of this book lies in Dr Parks' ability to convey information in a way that makes it truly useful to patients and their families. This is not an academic treatise or a training manual for health care providers. Medical jargon is only introduced when it is going to be clearly explained with analogies and examples. Based on our families' experience, Parks is authentic is his descriptions of the medical, psychological, and social issues involved and his tone is not rushed or over-heated. Instead, information from various disciplines is integrated in a way that presents a cohesive approach. What Parks offers here is a long-term coping model that is multi-disciplinary and designed to improve functioning for life. Our family has sought treatment for chronic pain for about 6 years and has met with very competent doctors from well-known facilities. This book puts it all together in a way that laypeople will find helpful and promising and we are excited to put it into practice.

Dr. Evan Parks takes us on an incredible journey of discovery as it relates to the systematic elements of chronic pain rehabilitation. When we feel pain, many of us search for a quick response to resolve the pain. We can easily lose sight of trying to understand the many different sources that could be creating this pain, or even adding to the intensity of it. He has crafted an eye-opening book that sheds light on the process of active pain management.
